Gua Sha

Gua Sha is a rubbing and scrapping technique to remove blockage which impedes the blood flow in the muscles layers of the body. When this occurs pain and restriction of movement results.

This wonderfully simple technique is used throughout Asia by both village healers and the Chinese Medicine Doctors. Due to this it is commonly known as folk medicine. Unlike the more structured medicines which are written down folk medicine is often an oral tradition and handed down from generation to generation.

Gua simply means to rub or scrap with a tool such as horn or some type of stone.

Sha is the red blotting or discoloration which occurs from this rubbing on the skin.

When applied correctly this technique will leave the skin with some redness and ecchymosis (bruising). This is considered a very successful sign and the pain and restriction of the area is noticed immediately.
